my/our project [Katie McGonigal and Fleur Augustinus]: The video is the end result of the experiment I vs. We.
The concept behind the experiment was creating a discussion in images. There where some rules:
1. Everybody can join by giving an answer to the question “what am I worth?” [the theme of Shaken Spring] they have to visualize the answer in an image/a work of any kind.
2. After this you can respond to a work of someone else. The way you respond/react is free, there are no boundaries, it’s allowed to attack/affect the work.
Halfway through the experiment we [Katie and I] observed that it lacked in depth and the experiment was too open-ended, it didn’t go anywhere. Everybody was making their own isolated works and there was little interaction with other works.
So we decided, through a rigorous measure, to take the experiment in a different direction. We took all the work and put it in a room under lock and key. “… In een hokje dichtgetimmerd”. The purpose of this action was to initiate discussion and to provoke confrontation. This happened, the action resulted in a heated debate.
The sound clips used in the film come from interviews with the participants. These interviews were conducted just before the decision to take action. The images show how we made all the different ‘isolated’ works into one piece to let I become We again, we used the piece to project our video on. The video shows the final outcome of the experiment, the action and discussion.
